Grid Smarter Cities Founder Neil Herron has received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Parking Awards 2026, recognising more than two decades of influence across parking law, enforcement, digital kerbside management and transport innovation. The award recognises parking professionals who have made outstanding contributions to the sector over the course of their career.
Neil’s career has taken him from challenging enforcement practices on behalf of motorists to developing technology designed to make compliance easier and help local authorities manage kerbside space more effectively. Many of the concepts he pioneered more than a decade ago are now at the centre of global discussions around smart mobility, automated transport and the future management of public space.
From 2006, Neil increasingly focused on transport, parking regulation and motorists’ rights. During his early work as a motorist advocate, Neil campaigned for greater fairness, transparency and accountability in parking enforcement. His efforts helped secure a £1 million refund programme for motorists following unlawful enforcement by Richmond Council (2011) and led to the withdrawal of unlawful credit card surcharges on parking penalties in Camden (2012).
He also played a central role in the landmark Herron v The Parking Adjudicator case. The resulting “Herron Judgment” established important principles around traffic signs and substantial compliance, helping create a clearer and more proportionate legal framework for parking enforcement across England and Wales.
In 2011, he began developing the concept of the Virtual Loading Bay, anticipating a future in which kerbside space could be managed digitally and respond dynamically to demand. This led to the creation of Grid Smarter Cities, founded in 2015, to bring that vision to life. Under his leadership, the company developed the Kerb® platform and pioneered technologies including Virtual Loading Bays, Permit Loading Bays, dynamic kerbside permissions, digital booking, geofencing and intelligent access management.

“That has driven my work ever since: using technology, innovation and collaboration to make compliance easier and improve kerbside management for motorists, businesses and local authorities.
“This recognition means a great deal because it comes from an industry I once challenged. I share it with the investors who believed in our vision, our dedicated team and the many colleagues, associates and partners who have contributed along the way.
“There is still much to do. As cities and mobility evolve, the kerbside will become increasingly important, particularly in enabling autonomous vehicles to understand where and when they can lawfully stop. The Lifetime Achievement Award follows further industry recognition for Neil and Grid, including the ITS UK Project of the Year and Better Environment Through Technology awards in 2022 and the British Parking Awards’ Future of Parking Award in 2025.
