Grid Smarter Cities Premieres New Walworth Road Video

New video highlights how Kerb® Delivery is transforming urban logistics on one of London’s busiest high streets.

Grid Smarter Cities is pleased to announce the release of its latest video, featuring Grid’s Sales & Account Manager Grace Ingledew, who takes viewers through the Walworth Road project, a landmark initiative that is setting a new benchmark for smarter kerbside management in urban environments.

The Challenge

Congestion costs the UK billions of pounds every year, with vehicles circling, idling, and competing for limited kerbside space. Walworth Road is a classic example of a busy London high street where buses, cyclists, taxis, pedestrians and delivery vehicles all vie for the same limited kerbside access. The traditional first-come, first-served model was no longer fit for purpose.

The Solution: Kerb® Delivery

Kerb® Delivery is Grid Smarter Cities’ booking platform that allows drivers, operators and businesses to reserve kerbside space in advance via a desktop or mobile app. The Walworth Road location features five bookable bays supported by four electronic signs displaying real-time availability, transforming the kerbside from a contested resource into a dynamic, manageable asset.

Real-World Impact

Since deployment, the project has delivered measurable improvements across the board:

  • Reduces congestion and emissions during peak hours
  • Improved driver compliance and operational efficiency
  • Minimised failed deliveries
  • Enabled more efficient parking enforcement
  • Reduced fuel costs for drivers
  • Improved safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians

“The street feels calmer and more organised, with less noise and fewer obstructions. This results in a safer, more efficient kerbside that saves time, fuel and money for everyone using it.” Grace Ingledew, Sales & Account Manager at Grid Smarter Cities

Scalable Across the UK

What Walworth Road demonstrates is that the model works on busy, complex high streets. The technology is flexible, the infrastructure is lightweight, and the approach can be adapted to different street layouts and local needs. This gives it real potential to be scaled across London — and ultimately to high streets across the UK.

The full video, featuring Grace’s walkthrough of the Walworth Road project, is available now on Grid Smarter Cities’ social media channels.

Notes on the scheme:

  • 5 bookable bays with adjunct loading options (virtual bays) with 4 double-sided signs
  • 2 bays on the North side of the street and 3 bays on the South side of the street
  • 0-15, 15-30, 30-45, 30-60, minute booking loading slots (longer than usual 20 minutes, bookings on the platform can be made in 15-minute increments)
  • There are no charges to use the bays at any time of day
  • One bespoke parking bay sized to meet the length and width requirements of a HGV freight vehicle is available on the North side of the road (to enable servicing to the nearby supermarket)
  • The bays can still be used for 24hrs a day, enabling freight operators to deliver to local businesses with greater flexibility and certainty
