Celebrating One Year of London’s First Bookable Kerbside Management Scheme at Walworth Road

This month at Grid we are celebrating the one-year anniversary of our Walworth Road project, the first bookable kerbside management scheme on a busy high street in Central London.

Launched in February 2024 in partnership with the London Borough of Southwark as part of their ‘Street for People’ strategy seeking to ‘Reduce the impact of freight on our streets and support business to operate sustainably and efficiently’ this first-of-its-kind project has supported businesses along the high street, enabling drivers to pre-book their loading spaces in advance – streamlining deliveries, improving efficiency and reducing congestion for a whole year.

Our Director of UK Sales Laura Jacklin commented: “When we first launched the bookable kerb with Southwark a year ago, we wanted to bring a system which could confidently manage the loading bays for business in this area and alleviate non-compliance in the bays. Throughout the year, we have created great relationships with the businesses, operators and enforcement team, and we have seen in the data a continuous increase in utilisation and of people joining the scheme. This has created a harmonious environment and ensures businesses thrive in such a busy high street”

How to Use the Bays

The bays are live and bookable by delivery operators in the area who register in advance. There are no charges to use the bays and bookings can be made throughout 24 hours of the day. To sign up and start using the bays please register using this link or email us at [email protected]

Notes on the scheme:

  • 5 bookable bays with adjunct loading options (virtual bays) with 4 double-sided signs
  • 2 bays on the North side of the street and 3 bays on the South side of the street
  • 0-15, 15-30, 30-45, 30-60, minute booking loading slots (longer than usual 20 minutes, bookings on the platform can be made in 15-minute increments)
  • There are no charges to use the bays at any time of day
  • One bespoke parking bay sized to meet the length and width requirements of a HGV freight vehicle is available on the North side of the road (to enable servicing to the nearby supermarket)
  • The bays can still be used for 24hrs a day, enabling freight operators to deliver to local businesses with greater flexibility and certainty
